As Fife’s only Veterinary Hospital I am sure you expect the highest standard of care for your loved one(s) each time you visit us, and we want to try and reduce the chance of them becoming ill in the first place! Modern veterinary care should mean that 85% of our work is in keeping pets healthy. For instance, we would prefer to supply you with the most effective flea treatment available, rather than treat your pet with a painful skin complaint later. So here is a brief list of some of the things that you can do for your pet. A list that we hope you will want to keep in order to remind you of what we can do to help you look after your pet.

Vaccination

Only half the dogs in Britain, and even fewer cats, are vaccinated. Sometimes this is due to financial reasons, but more often it is thought to be because of health scares in the NHS with children’s vaccination, or simple embarrassment at forgetting it for so long. We all live far busier lives than we did just a few years ago. As per recommendation, we vaccinate our clients pets yearly, but alternate certain components of it so that their immunity is only stimulated as many times as is necessary. If your pet is older, don’t think that it doesn’t need cover - this is the very time that their immunity is waning. Don’t forget rabbits either. They need to be vaccinated against Myxomatosis and HVD - please phone for details.

Worms

Milbemax is almost universally accepted currently as the best treatment available for round and tapeworms. It treats all the important species of worm and is cheaper than many lesser products. It is a small tablet that is easy to give. The British Veterinary Association recommend worming adult cats and dogs at least every 3 months, dependent on life style and area, a frequency endorsed by many councils for public hygiene reasons alone. To make your life easier we can remind you when the next dose is due.

Fleas

We see a large number of pets with quite severe skin problems, many of them at least aggravated by fleas. An increasing number of animals are now developing allergies to flea saliva, so that regular treatment now may prevent future life long medical care. At best, fleas still cause considerable discomfort.

Any pet that is ever within about 6 feet of another, or has ever been where another infested animal has been, is at risk. A single flea can lay up to 2000 eggs and most drop off in your home! So if a pet is not treated regularly, it is not a question of if, but when will they suffer. They are no longer just a seasonal problem, and all year treatment is now recommended with very safe, efficient products available from us (the ordinary retail preparations can not always kill fleas fast enough to prevent viable flea eggs from being shed around the house).

Don’t forget a veterinary treatment is available to discourage fly strike in rabbits too.

Food

It is no surprise that pets need a good quality (the right nutrients in the right proportion), easily digestible diet like we do. Unfortunately, the regulation of pet food manufacturers is limited, & many are more concerned with the taste. They rely on the fact that if you see your pet tucking into it, then you will probably buy it again. But what do you prefer? A salad or a fish supper?! Most of us choose the latter because that is what we have been used to eating, and yet we also know that by eating more healthily, our food preferences can change for the better.

As a practice we only recommend Hills science plan for healthy pets. This company is well aware that early palatability issues are important, & has been working hard to improve this - so if you have not had success in the past, try it again and ask for advice on introducing it, or tell us your other concerns. They even have their own dedicated helpline (0800 282438) for this very kind of support. Because your pet wont have to fight to get enough calories on this food (many other foods are packed out with cheap fibre), they dont eat as much, so that daily costs are very reasonable for dogs & positively cheap for cats (about 23p/day)! It is convenient, its content doesn’t vary between tins or between bags, in the dry form it is very slow to spoil, and it comes with a 100% guarantee so that you can return it for a full refund in the unlikely event that it doesn’t suit.

For our part, if you are on our Fit For Life Health Plan, you will get a discount (5%) on all Hill’s Science Plan foods.

If your pet alternatively has a medical condition, there is usually a Hill’s prescription food that will help. If these are going to make a real difference then the balance of the various nutrients often has to be significantly manipulated, and so these foods should only be used in conjunction with the advice of a vet. Be aware of the claims of some other companies that try and jump on the band wagon.

Neutering

Did you know that bitches that are spayed before their second season rarely get mammary gland tumours (breast cancer) or pyometras (womb infection) - both possibly fatal? They will live 2 years longer on average, and as they age approximately one year for every two months of our life, that means an extra 12 years in our terms!

If it is done early enough in male dogs it can prevent aggression, anal adenomas (tumours), testicular and prostatic cancers.

If your pet is on our Fit For Life Health Plan then you get a 10% discount on neutering and 50% discount on pre-op bloods and fluids when done at the time.

Micro-chipping

These can be injected under your loved ones skin to give a permanent method of identification. Most organisations now scan pets that are lost, or they may be injured & taken to a vet who will scan them. They reveal a code number that allows the control centre to alert you of your loved ones location. More valuable perhaps is that it may tell a vet treating them of the need for special medical treatment or care. It could be the best investment you ever made, and its cheap considering it guarantees somebody at the end of the head office telephone line for the rest of your pets life. To encourage you, we often have promotions, and if your pet is on our Fit For Life Health Plan then you will get a massive 30% discount off the normal price. It can be done at the time of an operation or in a routine appointment.

Insurance

The number of companies offering pet insurance is now approaching one hundred, yet all are NOT equal. Many will try & tempt you with a low premium (the monthly cost to you), and/or a low excess (the first amount of a claim that you must pay), but there are other considerations, e.g.

·      Are medical conditions covered for LIFE, just for one year or until a certain amount of money runs out?

·      Will they pay your vet directly to save you the inconvenience of paying possibly a large sum up front and then having to wait to reclaim it?

·      Do they list their charges for different policies in black & white so that you can consider the best one for you?

Besides cats and dogs, insurance is available for rabbits and certain other animals.

Statistically you are three times more likely to claim on your pet insurance than your house or car policies. You wouldn’t dream of leaving these uninsured, yet which is more valuable to you?

At present we only recommend Petplan as they are the only company fulfilling all the criteria above & we have been given authorisation to offer you the first 1-2 months FREE if you qualify. Our gain is that we can provide the very best care for your family member without having to warn you of the costs at each stage. That can cause both parties embarrassment. All the leaflets are in the waiting room, but if you dont like filling in forms, ask a nurse to do it for you.

Teeth

Did you know that about 86% of dogs and 73% of cats at any one time need dental treatment? Yet instinctively animals dont usually show discomfort until its quite severe, a sign of weakness in the wild. Open your pets mouth and ask yourself if you would walk around like it. If youre not sure, please phone for a FREE dental assessment with a nurse. If you are on our Fit For Life Health Plan your pet’s teeth will be checked routinely every 3 months. Our nurses can give lots of advice on keeping your pet’s teeth looking good.

Joints

On the question of discomfort and whether pets show it, how many of us need medication or at least supplements for sore joints? Recently a food called Hills j/d has been launched that has been scientifically proven to both limit the deterioration of your pet’s joints, and to improve weight bearing. It also contains supplements that we have found can be very effective in limiting the discomfort of arthritis, and these are also available as stand-alone veterinary products that can be purchased over the counter. There are also a number of anti-inflammatory medications available of course, that can be collected at the counter with an assessment of your pet possibly only being necessary every 6 months.

Cats have an amazing ability to hide the signs of joint discomfort from the uninitiated and I have personally been advocating the close assessment of senior cats for that reason since I qualified. Now the veterinary profession has woken up to the idea and has laid down some specific parameters to look out for. Why should they suffer any longer?

Savings Scheme

At the request of clients, we set up a standing order system some years ago, where you could pay into your account to build a credit and hopefully prevent the worries from that large bill, that always seems to come at the wrong time! We can now offer to collect payments by direct debit, making saving for those unexpected costs easier than ever.

PDSA

If you receive council tax or housing benefit and live in KY1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8, then you can and should register with us NOW to join the PDSA PetAid scheme. That means for just £5 you get FREE veterinary treatment for the next 6 or 12 months (depending on PDSA ruling) if your pet subsequently becomes ill, and registration can be continually renewed. And if you don’t live in one of the above areas we may still be able to help! It is not the same peace of mind as having your pet insured because funds are always limited, but it can literally make the difference between life and death. Please remember that this is a service that we choose to offer our clients. It is not something that we are obliged to provide, and we do not get paid by PDSA for the work we do.

Behaviour

Besides puppy parties to help socialise the pups, Kim VN, has a certificate in animal behaviour and is there to help you with problems. For instance, think about the dreaded firework season now & prepare to prevent your loved one unnecessary stress next time. It may reduce or prevent the need for medication altogether.

Visits

It is always a more efficient use of time, and often more practical, to see your pet at the Hospital where all the facilities are instantly available, but we appreciate that sometimes you just can’t get your pet to us. You may prefer a veterinary surgeon to see your pet in the comfort of your home, or appreciate the cost benefit of our collection and delivery service, when a member of staff will collect your loved one from your home and then return them after examination and treatment at the Hospital. This service can be used for pets having operations as well. Unfortunately we are not licensed to carry owners unless their pet is with them.

Our out of hours emergency service of course operates at all other times, and this is staffed by our own dedicated team of professionals.

Evening surgery admission

We appreciate that because of other commitments, not all our clients can get their pets to us in the mornings between 8.00am and 8.45am when they are booked in for an operation. We can arrange to admit your pet during evening consultations the night before up to 8.00pm, but please try and give us warning. If that does not involve us providing intensive care overnight, it comes as a free service to you.

Acupuncture

We offer acupuncture for your pet with Dr Sarah Binns. Please see our separate acupuncture leaflet for more information.

Clubs

Whether or not you buy a product or service from us, we want you to know that we are there to support you during pet ownership. That is why we have set up a number of clubs run by qualified veterinary nurses to help you deal with any problems that you might encounter, and best of all they are all free!

These clubs include Weight Watchers (for overweight pets - not owners!), the Good Food club (for those on special diet - not followers of Egon Ronay), Furry Friends club (for childrens pets and exotics), and Fresh Breath club (for dental cases). There is a Youth club (for the adolescents), an Upwardly Mobile club (for arthritic pets), a Faithful Friends club (for geriatrics) and Club Chaos  (for behavioural cases). These all play an important role in helping your pet to get as much out of life as possible, but to be honest are fun for us as well! Our Puppy Parties have always been popular.

There are also clinical clubs to help owners of pets with Diabetes, chronic heart disease, kidney, liver and gastro-intestinal disease etc. They all unite in supporting our Fit For Life program.

Fit For Life Healthcare Plan

You can now budget for your pet’s routine needs, as well as doing everything you can to keep them happy and healthy. For a regular monthly fee you can get 3 monthly Fit For Life health assessments with a qualified veterinary nurse, wormers and flea products as per our recommendations, discounts off a wide range of products and services, and best of all a FREE annual booster for as long as your pet is on the scheme. Please ask any member of staff for further information and see the separate sheet with details of the costs and savings of this service.

Collection and Delivery Service

EquiPet Veterinary Hospital now offers a collection and delivery service. We can collect your pet (and one accompanying adult) in our ambulance and bring you to the hospital in time for your appointment. If you wish we will be happy to take your pet home again afterwards (and the accompanying adult as well!). This service will run for appointments between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. Payment for this service will be due in full at the time of the appointment and will not be covered on pet insurance. The costs are as follows:

Area 1: Kirkcaldy and Kinghorn - £4 each way

Area 2: Burntisland, Dysart, Cardenden - £6 each way

Area 3: Aberdour, Inverkeithing, Dalgety Bay, Glenrothes, Methil, Leven, Dunfermline -           £8 each way

We are also happy to deliver any food or prescriptions you may need at other times. Deliveries will be made between 9am and 5pm and the items must be paid for in full at the time of ordering (with the exception of prescriptions covered on pet insurance or PDSA PetAid). The costs to deliver to addresses in area 1 is £2.50 per delivery (not per item), and in areas 2 and 3 the cost is £5.00 per delivery (not per item). These costs will not be covered on pet insurance.

Well, I have already written more than I wanted to and obviously there are many other products and services available, but ponder this. I wrote this because of the poor uptake of preventative products and services from veterinary practices across the UK, currently recorded as

                                                Dogs                    Cats

Worming treatments                     5%                      8%

Flea treatments                           25%                    38%

Lifestyle foods (like Hills)              5%                      8%

Prescription foods                         8%                      9%

Dental care                                  7%                      7%

Insurance                                   17%                    10%

Yet only vets/veterinary nurses have the knowledge, and very often are the only ones with the right to prescribe the best products for a particular problem. Because these products are in a different legal category to others they are more thoroughly tested and are thus usually safer than their equivalents in pet shops and supermarkets. They are often no more expensive and always better value for money. So why is the uptake across the UK so poor? I can think of only two reasons, namely because it is more convenient for an owner to collect products when shopping, and more convenient for us ‘po faced professionals’ not to risk being accused of selling anything. If we both truly want to do the very best for our family members then surely neither is an acceptable reason.
